Florence

The girl pictured in the foreground is named Florence.  Florence is almost completely blind, only able to see objects about a foot away from her face.  Even then she can only make out a portion of what is in her sight.

Florence, however, has very good hearing.  She is not able to make out a person from their sight but only by the sounds that they make.  If her father is near she will be able to tell only by the sound of his voice.  When you talk to Florence, even if it is not in Swahili, she becomes bright.  I have never seen quite the same light shine from anyone else.

When I took this photo she could hear me sitting there at her feet, in the dust.  She listens to even the stillest, smallest voice and the most seemingly insignificant noise.

It would be easy to feel sorry for Florence.  But I don't feel sorry... I envy her quietness.  I envy that she can enjoy the warmth of the sun without understanding the source of the warmth.  She is able to melt in happiness at a voice she does not even understand.  Florence trusts that the voice's intention is only good.  She understands that intention only by listening.

I want to enjoy, like Florence, the Voice that heals the sick with the smallest of words.  I want to stand in the Light of His Presence without questioning how and why He is.

When I went to Kenya I was not prepared to learn so much from the children there.  I thought that I would go to love them and hug them and teach them many new things. But quite the opposite happened.

How deep the love of the Father, that he would use the souls of children to humble me and love me.
