Cherry Towels

Anna Hanchett

'Cherry Towels' was conceived in July of 2013 while spending a summer in Sweden visiting dear friends. An ongoing fascination with the common human desire to preserve that which she finds sacred from pollution was a major concept in the development of the work. Using ‘made in Sweden’ towels, the dyeing of the cloth in hand-picked cherries references the regenerative processes of the human body’s transitory nature.

The submission of cloth into cherry juice creates a vulnerability that carries analogies of nourishment and the life cycle - birth, maturation, death and decay. While cloth discloses, it can also conceal; in this case the bondage of the dyed towels references the longing to preserve the particular experience of picking, pitting and eating cherries with friends.
