Stuff I Like: Michigan State University

I feel like I am being hit with all things Michigan lately.

1) On Sunday night my friend’s parents were in town from Michigan. Awesome accents. I claim I never had one, but some beg to differ.

2) Today I travel home to Michigan.

3) Unfortunately many of us saw the sad Michigan State loss to Butler in the NCAA tourney. I don’t want to talk about it.

4) Last night I saw Mayer Hawthorne perform.  He is a Michigan native which is fantastic, but he was also raised in Ann Arbor…so I kind of felt like a traitor attending the show.

I don’t understand Joy. Traitor? I thought you loved all things Michigan.

FALSE.

I love all things Michigan State.  East Lansing is the home of MSU.

Ann Arbor, where Mayer Hawthorne was born and raised, is where University of Michigan is located.

Let me explain: Growing up in East Lansing, one is indoctrinated (rightly so) to strongly dis-like U of M, Ann Arbor, Wolverines, and anything blue or yellow.

TRUTHS about Joy (I am shifting into 3rd person.):

a)   She was born in East Lansing and lived there until age 18.

b)  She woke up many Saturday mornings hearing the MSU band practice or perform.

c)   She has more Michigan State clothing than she does from her own college.

d)  She claims to bleed green.

e)   She likes to pretend she started the ’99 NCAA riots herself, although this is up for debate.

f)    She is “allegedly” in the background of a poster from a Michigan vs. Michigan State basketball game.

g)   She says hi to anyone wearing MSU clothing…anywhere.

h)  She has an instant gag reflex when she sees U of M clothing….or yellow and blue together. Period.

i)   She doesn’t know the names of any current athletes.  However she will cheer if they are on T.V, say they are the best no matter what, and will always choose them to go all the way should she fill out an NCAA bracket.

j)    She is currently wearing a white t-shirt, green sweater and white tennis shoes as she types this.  Coincidence?

k)   She is naming her first child Sparty. Boy or girl.

So there you have it. I like Michigan State. Win or lose, it will always be my team.

“Go right through for MSU!”

Yet another reason we should be dating. We both hate University of Michigan (I’m an OSU alum and a Columbus native). My husband is from WV and is always like, “We’re such good fans that we set couches on fire in support of our team.” And then I’m all like, “We set cars on fire, lightweight. And houses. And entire city blocks.”

I so admire how you lead by example in that relationship. That, and taunting. Well done woman.

question. would you rather: have blue and gold as your wedding colors OR have a baby that looked shockingly like a wolverine with no added skills?
