Ask Joy: My Ideal Man

Ask Joy:

Recently, one of you wrote in – anonymously – asking what I want in a man.

My Response:

I was going to pass on this Ask Joy, and then thought, I might as well capitalize on my site and use it to find a man. Boo-ya.

Question:

What is your equivalent of my beard requirement? What’s been your shallowest deal breaker?

As I stated on the Love & Respect Now Facebook page, I don’t think I could date someone who was really into Nickelback or Twilight. I think I’m pretty safe on the first one, but judging by the popularity of the second I may be alone for a LOOOOOONG time. 🙂

@G Fresh, Whatever you do, don’t add Hunger Games to that list or you will be single for life.

@JOY, I actually just finished reading the trilogy last week (entirely on my iPhone Kindle app, btw, which was a little weird) and I thoroughly enjoyed it. And although I thought Ms. Collins rushed the ending just a bit, I generally liked how everything turned out.

@Heather Summers, You may be right; Chad Kroeger does have a sparkly mullet sometimes.

My equivalent to the “Beard Requirement” would be a Servants Heart. Not only at home, but at our church too. She also must have the Heart of a Teacher; There are large gaps between the Senior and more mature Christians and the next generation, she would have to want to train and equip the next generation so they can train the generation after them.

“Shallowest Deal Breaker;” I want to go have fun with coworkers and pursue what I want and I don’t need a husband here holding me back.

“Am I developing something someone else might want?” That is an awesome statement Joy; I have heard so many (men and women) say “I am looking for this/that.” Yet so many are not looking at all into what they can do to better themselves or prepare them for supporting a spouse and/or family.

Keep up the great work Joy!

@JOY, Actually, I could live without the beard, so I’ll leave it with you. I’ll take the plaid shirts 3-4 days a week 😉

@JOY, as soon as I saw the question I started thinking your cameraman was or else really young or else way to old :p
I am 25 to answer your question.

amen. being the resident relationship therapist among my friends [translation: oldest and singlest] the reality question is my mantra. for both them and me. “what has actually been said?” works. every. time. they love to hate me for it. in al seriousness, i totally agree. grow in Christ and as a person and stick to reality. hard, but good.
beard equivalent/deal breaker: mexican food. he must like mexican food. and coffee.

@guide to women, I am a fan of your husband’s beard too. And I mean that in the most platonic way possible. But you know that…

You can always trust a man with a beard: we are typically a practical, down to earth folk. Beards indicate that we don’t take ourselves too seriously, but also have our eye out for realistic, practical solutions to real world problems. In this case, “Hm. My face is cold. I know, I’ll grow a beard.” problem. Solved.

Is the opening scene of Hoosiers really your grandpa’s farm? If you don’t answer here, I WILL get to the bottom of this.

So true, Joy. I loved what you said at the end because I have watched many friends watching and waiting for Mr. right instead of working on being Mrs. right. Oh, and how did I not know that Hoosiers was filmed at your grandpa’s house?!

When i had a list of what i wanted in a man, I included a love for roast potatoes. I love roast potatoes, and the idea of being with a man who didn’t love them was a horrifying though. So that’s probably my shallowest thing.
The other things i had on my list like Height, and fashion sense, and hair style, never really worked in my favour. I married a man shorter than me who exclusively wears black, and seems to refuse to get a haircut. But i got the important things – generosity, kindness, the ability to make me laugh, passion and a willingness to always grow into a better man.
