This one goes out to all my ladies!
(Guys, it’s okay. You can stay or skip down to the bottom for the chance to win a rad read.)
I want to talk to you about my friend, Jennie Allen. She’s a writer, speaker, teacher, and most importantly, a dreamer. And lately, her dreams have been coming true.
The great thing is, Jennie is just as passionate about your dreams coming true, too.
Between her new book, Restless, and the launch of the IF:Gathering this February 7–8 (backstage correspond-ed by yours truly, no big deal), Jennie is committed to unleashing what God has in store for us. She calls women of all denominations and walks of life to join together and ask big questions like, “If God is real, then what?”
Yeah, she’s awesome.
So there you have it! Like I said in the video, Restless: Because You Were Made for More is pretty much a version of sitting down with this dynamic gal and getting a big ol’ bowl of truth for breakfast. Like this:
“We are called to dream but we’re afraid to. But because we are called, when we don’t act on it we become restless—restless to find purpose, to make a difference in the world, to matter.” What if discovering God’s unique calling for your life is your greatest responsibility, second only to knowing and loving God? Your restlessness may very well be a divine invitation to purpose, calling and life.
Good stuff, right?! If you want more of where that came from, go buy Jennie’s new book, Restless. Or, you could just have me give you a copy.
Jennie Allen has graciously offered to give away 5 copies of her new book, Restless: Because You Were Made for More. Leave a comment and we’ll contact you Monday if your name is drawn!

Love and Respect (Now) is a division of Love and Respect. Please be considerate.
PICK ME PICK ME PICK ME. Haha. No seriously, pick me. Also, this event sounds AMAZING and so does your new friend Jennie. She sounds almost prophetic in her own right, no? Well I am excited to read the book and tune in via live streaming. And Joy break a leg (no not really, that’s such a weird saying)… but, seriously all the best backstage and have fun!!!!!!!!!!!
Ps… The dialogue with Alece HIT HOME and I will get back there to share with you both. Blessings & Love XO
Oh wow yikes!!! Your a warrior (bride) with wounds to prove it huh??? Well, I pray you be strengthened and walk in divine health, in Jesus name. So yea, I hope I get to meet you in Portland some day. I’ve had an obsession to go there ever since I read “Blue Like Jazz” by Donald Miller!!! What an IMPACT that book had on my life wooh! Ps… did you pick a winner? Sorry if I missed any announcement. TTYS XO
I’m reading this now. I can tell you without a doubt that this is the book that I need to be reading at this moment in my life. So, so good.
Also, I will be joining you in Austin! I was one of the lucky few to get a ticket, so I’m super pumped!!
Yep! Whatever year it was you and Bianca did the lab together. Was that two years ago or three?
That books sounds wonderful, for me, in my quest to wakeup! and figure out what God has been calling me to do. Being restless has been a permanent state of mine for far too long and I want to answer the call – question is now just figuring out the “what”…and how…and when. just little questions, no pressure 🙂
I’ve been hearing such great things about this book and CANNOT wait to read it. 😀 I’d love to win a copy. Thanks for instagramming this giveaway, btw.
I have so been wanting to read this book as I am facing a new stage of life and trying to find my place again. Definitely feeling restless and unsure of myself.
“We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams” – Arthur O’Shaughnessy and Willy Wonka
Ohhh, so THAT’S why I’m feeling restless! (I’m tapping my feet as we speak. Or as I type.
So does that work? You just ask to be friends? Novel concept. Putting that on my to-do list. Noticed another video where your Dad is wearing an MSU hat. I graduated from there. Feeling like I need to get to know you better. 🙂
I have several copies of Restless. So I’m good. It’s good. We’re all good. Loved this video though. Great job!
I have been thinking about making a 5 hour road trip to if. But I’d rather stay home. Yay for the opportunity to! And if I win, Joy I will send you a pic of my handsome son wearing his favorite astronaut unicorn shirt. I may even turn it into a selfie 😛 Just for you, of course. LOL
I love the quote! . I had actually turned away from God after a devestating loss, but I stumbled across your youtube videos and loved them. They began to slowly allow me to peak through the crack in the door I had shut on God and see what was on the other side. That door is now starting to open and I have you to thank Joy! I think this book would be a wonderful next step in my journey with redicovering the faith I had lost.
I’ve heard a lot of buzz around this book, so I’m really looking forward to reading it. It sounds like a great book.
I had a really exciting job in a startup that I was super excited about, but then a lot of things changed including my boss leaving, and I’m currently just in the middle of watching some dreams slowly die. I could really use some encouragement in this season and would love to win this book as I consider looking for a job, maybe moving…all hard to say at this moment. Anyways, sign me up. Thanks.
I just stumbled across this book a couple of weeks ago via IG… Would love a copy of this….
After a 30 year marriage, starting over, working through all the baggage, desiring to honor God in this journey. God, how do you desire for me to use the remainder of my life to bring you the greatest honor and glory? Father, what plans did you lay in place for me for such a time as this, before the foundations of the world were laid?
Thank you, Sheryl
I feel like it’s just time to purchase this book since I keep trying to win it (ahem, Lindsey Nobles.)
Joy,
I’ve been reading your site for a long time, and the more I read it, the more I’m convinced that your ministry is aimed (perhaps unintentionally) at people who think and act like you – young women. Sure, you give an occasional nod to the men, but mostly you/your site seem to enjoy reveling in the thoughts and concerns of young women. You seem to treat men (just like most Christian churches) as an unnecessary, miscellaneous being that you merely tolerate in the name of being “Christian,” but whom you don’t want to spend any time or thought on, and whose presence you would prefer to avoid if possible, were it not for all the many ways in which we become useful to you women when it serves your purposes.
I like your Father’s ministry, and I keep trying to like yours as well, but you keep making that difficult for me, because I keep seeing several examples of when you respond to men with assumptions, rather than listening to them and trying to understand and find the validity in their concerns. You are too quick to disregard the issues men complain about, and seem like you would rather sweep those complaints under the rug of “devil’s advocate” than address those issues as genuine grievances women should take seriously and change within themselves. Like the Church, you would rather see men change to match the needs of women, but don’t seem as equally invested in the process of encouraging women to change to meet the needs of men.
I like your message overall, but have many concerns with how you choose to engage men/women with regard to that message. You probably do have good intentions – Your heart might be good-willed, but I think you are missing he mark on how to address men in your ministry.
Either you should learn how better to understand and address men with your message, or you should find a young man who can, because I mostly just see a ministry with way too much estrogen all over the place (including cutesy, girly Unicorns), and not enough discussion on issues that men care about.
Maybe I’m just expecting too much from a ministry run by a young woman who attempts to address the concerns of both genders. (And don’t just have a Portland Christian Feminist knee-jerk reaction to that statement. Even the bible says that women aren’t supposed to have a teaching leadership position over men, and maybe you aren’t the best one from whom men should be learning. Maybe men would be best served by learning from other men. It’s not about you!)
Stop treating men like we’re stupid. If you don’t understand our perspectives, then ask more questions, but don’t just assume you understand our perspective before giving us bad advice.
From what I’ve read, you have A LOT to learn about men, and might not be the best person to be offering us advice. Again, it’s not personal. We just need better teaching, and if your ministry is going to attempt to tech men, then make sure you are doing it correctly. Talk to your dad or some of your pastors about this if you need to, but don’t just disregard my comments as “some angry misogynist” because I’m not being politically correct.
If you want your ministry to be for women only, then say so, but otherwise you need to de-chick-ify everything (and kill off the unicorns), and encourage more men to participate in discussions that we care about.
Your site screams FOR WOMEN ONLY, and I have a hunch that it wasn’t a total accident. You like the things that interest you, and you like interacting with people like you. But most men don’t like those things.
Maybe I do come across as “unloving,” but I mostly just want you (and most women) to take the concerns of men seriously.
Stop ignoring us or becoming so female-self-focused that you forget we are here too. It is not good for your ministry.
Joy, if I bought you a unicorn, would that guarantee me a copy?! Haha!!!!!!
Awww, how sweet! Thank you for thinking of me on my birthday, Jennie! 🙂 That’s totally why she wanted to give away 5 of them after all. Because she wanted to make it more possible for me to get one! 😉 Seriously though, I just turned 32 on the 23. Sort of backwards there huh? lol
Wow. I was actually looking up something for my husband and I and ran into this too! Your enthusiasm reminds me of my daughter who is 18, first year of college. She is surrounded by many who want to discourage her God given dreams. This would be a great book for her and in turn many lives she touches. It’s encouraging as a mom to know there are people out there that can encourage my daughter. Keep pressing on.
Joy, i’m inspired and impressed by you everytime. you seem to have it all together while still being open and sharing about mistakes and realities of life. thanks for all you do. wish i could do just a little of all the great work you are up to.
I love the idea of this book! i need to find my mission!!!
How true! Our drives to go forward work against our fears to hold back, and viola! We don’t know what to do, but want to do something! 😉 Sounds like she’s got some great points, and sounds like a very interesting book!
It’d be terrific to get a chance at it!
Hope your event does super fantastic and all sorts of people are encouraged by it! We need so much more of that, it seems. 🙂
