Stuff I Like: Love Gives Way

Hello my friendlings,

For all of you who have a case of the winter blues, take heart, because things are about to change. Spring is on its way. And you know what this season brings? Hay fever.

I mean, people getting engaged.

I’ve always thought weddings should focus on something bigger than the invites/dress/flowers/dinner mints, and now we are finding organizations focusing on something even bigger—outside of just the bride and groom. Recently, one of LRN’s own family, Joann, celebrated her son’s wedding. His photographer, Paper Antler, donated part of their fees to a safe house called “She Dances,” which combats human trafficking in Honduras.

Oh, what’s that?

That’s the sound of another organization devoted to fighting for freedom. Love Gives Way, is a community that partners soon-to-be couples with vendors who are doing their part in the battle against sex trafficking.

“Let your one day affect her everyday” is their motto. Some info on them…

  • Based in Atlanta, GA, where 300 girls are exploited every month in the Metro area alone.
  • Couples choose to work with different clients—photographers, chefs, bakers, DJs—who all believe in using their talents and part of their paychecks to bring these local Atlanta girls to freedom.
  • A portion of every wedding package is donated to Wellspring Living, Inc., a non-profit organization bringing rehabilitation and restoration to the sexually abused and exploited.

Your wedding day can be even more significant when a couple chooses to hire vendors with a broader focus. And if YOU are someone involved in the wedding industry, I would challenge you to think of a way to do your business differently.

When we can focus our marriages on becoming partnerships that have purpose, the foundation of our marriages will take on a whole new meaning.  And when that partnership looks like being the hands and feet of Jesus to those who are suffering, that partnership is going to be filled with all sorts of purpose, y’all! (Just trying to keep the Atlanta theme going.)

Why not kick off that purposeful partnership on yer’ weddin’ day. (Atlanta accent overkill?)

From my heart,

Joy

Questions

Do you know of any other wedding companies or vendors doing something like this? PLEASE share their city and website, if possible.

If you don’t know of any organizations like this, what are some other ideas you have seen that would create a unique wedding that would make an impact beyond just the shindig itself?

I wish I would have known about this when I was planning my wedding! Its so great!!! We did give a financial gift from our wedding budget to a nonprofit organization we care about instead of giving party favors. We figured our families and friends would understand. They did 🙂

I don’t know of any others like that, but, man, is that an awesome thing. One thing my friends did on their wedding is instead of favors on the table everyone got a card that said they weren’t getting favors because the couple took that money and donated it to a local organization that supports young cancer survivors. The bride had just been declared done with chemo and in remission about four months earlier. I’ve still got the card at home.

People throw away favors. It’s the things that change lives they hold onto. Now I’m going to go searching locally for those kinds of organizations. Or start one myself 🙂

So I’m not launching an organization. I kept looking for things and thinking about something new I could do when I realized I just needed to keep doing what is working for me. I just completed hosting my second virtual 5k. You sign up online, run anywhere and get a T-shirt. 100% of the proceeds after the costs of the T-shirts and shipping go to the local family or organization that I’ve chosen for that year. I love it, and it grew year. I’m hoping the trend continues 🙂

While, I believe they are doing great things, and am glad they are doing something to help women, I’m really disappointed that organizations continue to portray Human-Trafficking as a “Women and Children” issue only. There are also many men who are trafficked illegally for both forced labor and forced sex trafficking. They deserve help too.

Yes- Always a good reminder. Would love if you could point us to resources or organizations that are inclusive of that and can give us more awareness. Thanks!

This is awesome and I’m so glad to know that there are organizations like this! I’ll definitely have to keep this in mind when it’s my turn. 🙂 I already know that when the time comes, I will definitely use whatever budget I have for favors as a donation to an anti-trafficking organization instead of candy or some trinket. That has always been something I’ve wanted to do but now to know that there maybe vendors who would want to donate a portion of their cost to end human trafficking as well? That’s pretty darn awesome 🙂

Great idea! This is a great thing to do. Those who are planning a wedding recently should know this!
