Eric Metaxas: Marriage, Miracles & Movies

Eric Metaxas has written another book, and I’m sure it will also land on the New York Times bestsellers list like my other favorite book, Bonhoeffer (which he also wrote). Moving in a slightly a different direction than a historical bio, Eric’s most recent project, Miracles, centers on a topic that is a bit of a mystery to most of us.

But before we dive into all of that, get ready for some laughter as I take him through some “would you rather” questions and talk comedy, coffee and his distaste for wasps.

Literally.

“With wit and wisdom, Eric Metaxas will blow your mind with stories of phenomena beyond anything we might classify as merely natural. And he will bless your heart with what can happen in your life personally as you read stories of people (very smart people I might add) who “extra-ordinarily” encountered God’s majestic purpose converging with their daily lives, stunning and humbling them forever. Are you next?”
– Emerson Eggerichs, author of Love and Respect,
on Miracles by Eric Metaxas

I LOVED this interview! I especially found the dialogue you guys had about dating in today’s culture really important and something I wish I had realized and had the courage to talk about 10 or 15 years ago. Being newly married (only 3 months) and 32 years old, there is a long history of dating I look back on, sort of with new eyes. I’m excited to check out Eric’s books. Thanks Joy.

By far my favorite interview, Joy! I have to start by saying that Eric’s book Bonhoeffer was one of my favorite reads ever and there was just something so satisfying by reading it (I too felt super smart). Ok, so I’ve been in a relationship for two years, a sickening up and down that leaves us both exhausted and I just had a miracle happen today when Eric pointed out the wisdom of not being so emotionally and physically intimate outside of marriage. I always knew about the physical but I never knew about the emotional. Love, pressure, failure, love, pressure, failure. That was my story. I’m so excited that I heard everything he said- game changer. Thanks!!!

Another stellar interview! His points on dating in today’s world are extremely valid. If people aren’t gonna get married until they are in their late 20’s or 30’s, there is no reason for them to get so intimate in high school or college. Keep it simple and hang out with friends, make dates a step in the relationship above social gatherings, and save the intimate stuff for marriage. It can save you from a lot of heartache, pain, and regret. (stepping off my soap box)

I look forward to reading Miracles and Bonhoeffer. I love the idea of miracles. In all honesty, if it weren’t for a couple of miraculous experiences as a young teen, I probably wouldn’t believe in God today. That said, God is still God and still does miracles.

i am wife of 40 years ,much appreciated advice on courting instead of dating. We encouraged our 5 kids to choose to date a prospective spouse and all have married wise Christian mates (one glitch) old movies had great lessons,Andy hardy versus today’s tv’s smut. Romance and faithfulness versus quick and free?

A well-spent hour! I’m currently reading “Bonhoeffer”, which is a fantastic book. I think the most beneficial part for me (besides the destressing laughter) was hearing how Eric Metaxas is making the best use of his time – it’s quite a discipline. On another note, I wonder what you two would have to say about being married to a strong-willed woman.

Idea: Metaxas’ next book is biography of Gerard Manley Hopkins. I think Hopkins the sort of hero we could use today – especially in regards to sexual ethics, not to mention his poetic talent and way of seeing the world. I would love to see Metaxas tell Hopkins’ story.

I would also love to win a signed copy of Miracles, so there’s that too.

After this interview, I just added Eric Metaxes to my answer to “If you could host a dinner party with any three people, who would they be?”.

I love that Eric, an intellectual, is now writing on a subject that intellectuals usually shy away from, or even scorn. It is so refreshing. That’s pure “spirit and truth,” baby! Can’t wait to read it.

Fantastic interview!! We loved the wonderful humor and natural conversation! Eric is one of our all time favorite authors and speakers! Thank you for doing this – I just finished 7 Men and I bought my wife Miracles for her Christmas present and she found this interview after finishing the book. She was so excited about the movie news that she texted me right away to go watch the interview. We cannot wait to see the movie – we’ve talked about what a great opportunity this story is to do a world class movie and Metaxas is just the one to allow the Lord use him as His vessel to make it miraculously good! Looking forward to the next Skype interview already!!
